Registered Nurse – Job Summary & Key Responsibilities
Role Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides direct patient care using the nursing process and is responsible for planning, coordinating, delegating, and evaluating care for assigned patients. Care delivery follows established nursing, hospital, and multidisciplinary standards. The RN assesses, diagnoses, and treats patient responses to health conditions while promoting safety, recovery, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and reassess patients’ immediate and ongoing physical, psychosocial, and spiritual care needs
- Develop, implement, and update comprehensive plans of care, including patient education and discharge planning
- Deliver direct patient care in alignment with medical orders and nursing standards
- Supervise and coordinate care provided by LPNs, nursing attendants, technicians, and supplemental staff
- Monitor, document, and communicate patient responses to treatment and changes in condition
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to establish priorities and ensure timely care delivery
- Ensure age-specific and culturally appropriate care within unit scope
- Maintain accountability for nursing interventions and patient outcomes
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, research, and pilot projects
- Support orientation, education, and mentoring of nursing staff and student nurses
- Assume charge nurse responsibilities as assigned
- Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff
- Participate in meetings, committees, continuing education, and professional development activities
- Float or assist in other units as required and perform additional duties as assigned
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
- Ability to manage stressful situations effectively
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience (preferred)
- Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Prolonged standing, walking, reaching, bending, and stooping
- Lift/carry up to 10 lbs routinely; up to 100 lbs when assisting patients
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards, and physical risks (e.g., needle sticks)
Education & Licensure
Required:
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Active and unrestricted New York State RN license
- BLS
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing (BSN/MSN)
