Job Summary

  • Provides inpatient obstetrical care for essentially healthy women including labor management, delivery of infant, repair of lacerations/epistiotomy and management of minor complications.
  • Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical histories.
  • Orders tests and exams to obtain additional information needed to ensure proper and complete care of patient.
  • Diagnoses patient needs and interprets and integrates data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as needed.
  • Utilizes advanced specialty knowledge to ensure that the care provided is appropriate, effective, timely, and cost efficient.
  • Stays with patient during labor for reassurance and medication administration.
  • Delivers infant and performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.
  • When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of Obstetrician.
  • Performs diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures and administers medications and injections in compliance with state law always practicing sterile techniques and universal precautions.
  • Maintains monitoring and continuity of care between patient visits.
  • Educates obstetrical patients and families relative to fetal development, nutrition, exercise, and prescriptions while ensuring continuity of care.
  • Triages patient phone calls, provides consultations and manages medical emergencies according to established procedures.
  • Adheres to State and Federal controlled substance regulations.
  • Documents and updates medical and patient charts. Prepares and maintain required records, reports, statistics and files.
  • Ensures patient care activities are updated and documented according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Ensures charges are documented on unit capture sheet and forwarded to proper location/staff for entry into billing system.
  • Collects and enters patient information into database system.
  • Ensures all charts are signed by physician before releasing to medical record department.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, professionalism, clinical excellence, and promotes positive attitude among co-workers in compliance with standards.
  • Sets priorities, follows through and applies self-direction.
  • Reviews pertinent literature and communicates important information.
  • Seeks various educational offerings to achieve and maintain clinical expertise.
  • Maintains professional credentials and education necessary to keep abreast and maintain a current knowledge of clinical/theoretical principles, concepts and techniques, best practices and current trends.
  • Works on special projects as assigned
  • Maintains confidentiality of information collected and reported in accordance with HIPAA/compliance policies and procedures. Maintains and adheres to established department's policies, procedures, compliance/quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control program.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements
  • Attends staff meetings, all mandatory in-service, and additional continuing education as required
  • Responds to problems/opportunities to improve care/operations
  • Supports and is involved in the organization’s Performance Improvement initiatives, which include committees, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements


  • Graduate of an approved nursing school/program.


  • Two (2) years of experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife preferred.

License Or Certification:

  • Registered Nurse licensure to work in state of TN and certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (must include certification and prescriptive authority).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of coding and billing parameters that govern provision of patient care by Certified Nurse Midwives with state of Tennessee and as applicable to individual carriers.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of required regulatory documents and other forms in accordance with FDA, study sponsor and institutional guidelines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high levels of customer service
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, physicians and hospital staff.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays and nights as required to maintain 24/7 Labor and Delivery Unit.
