Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
  • Function in the scrub and/or circulating role during operative or other invasive procedures in accordance with scope of practice, credentials, privileges, education, and experience.
  • Ensure the operative procedure is performed on the correct patient and site by:Reviewing the operative schedule.Reviewing the operative consent.Verifying procedure site and side with the patient.Resolving identified discrepancies with the surgeon and patient before the operation.Participating in the pre-procedure verification, per-incision Time Out, and sign-out process.
  • Develop an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  • Implement the plan of care by:Protecting the patient from injury caused by various sources.Performing accounting procedures to prevent unintended retained surgical items.Ensuring the procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.Managing patient specimens appropriately.Communicating the patient's status to the appropriate parties.Administering medications safely and correctly.Performing interventions to maintain wound and tissue perfusion.Maintaining the patient's physiological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances.
  • Provide education on psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and responses to the procedure.
  • Actively involve the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting their perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years operating room experience.
  • Current NY State RN License required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.
  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred.
