Provides operational oversight of the surgical team providing safe and efficient patient care. Coordinates and communicates with the PACU/Pre-Op staff and Anesthesia to ensure efficient patient throughput in all of Surgical Services. Develop and maintain physician relationships while monitoring performance and activities of nurses, technicians and support staff. Ensures all equipment, supplies and outside vendor needs are present, functional and ready and unit in compliance with all regulatory requirements. Conducts staff training and education to ensure staff competency and yearly training requirements are met. Perform rounds on patients to ensure excellent patient care is being delivered and performs service recovery as needed. AORN certification required.

Essential Functions

• Works as Permanent Charge Nurse implementing the plan of care; within the concepts of the Licensed Registered Nurse curriculum; with consideration for safety in practice; according to established prioritization of need
• Monitors and documents performance of staff and takes appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary
• Monitors unit retention, conducts exit interviews and acts on them
• Evaluates patient(s) responses to nursing care rendered; documents and communicates evaluation data to appropriate health care team members; contributes to the modification of the nursing plan of care based on ongoing evaluation
• Coordinates orientation of new staff to ensure clinical competence. Assist with orientation of float and agency personnel
• Assists in holding staff accountable for hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures, competencies and process improvement initiatives
• Assists in the education and preparation of nursing staff for accreditation visits (IDPH & HFAP)
• Coordinates unit based staffing assignments on a shift by shift basis to achieve high quality and cost-effective care
• Assumes 24-hour accountability
• Annually reviews and approves all departmental standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols
• Monitors utilization of staff, supplies, and equipment for optimal efficiency, and makes recommendations as appropriate
• Ensures charges are entered appropriately on a daily basis
