About the Role:

As a GI RN at a DirectShifts facility in Illinois, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to patients with a variety of gastrointestinal conditions, ranging from inflammatory bowel disease to digestive cancers. You will work collaboratively with gastroenterologists, surgeons, other nurses, and healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes throughout their treatment journey.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients' GI health, monitor vital signs, and interpret test results (e.g., endoscopy, colonoscopy).
  • Administer medications, provide patient education on disease management and self-care techniques (e.g., dietary modifications, ostomy care).
  • Assist with GI procedures like endoscopy and colonoscopy, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Monitor and manage feeding tubes and drainage systems.
  • Educate patients and families about GI conditions, treatment options, and potential complications.
  • Provide emotional support and address patient concerns related to digestive health.
  • Maintain a sterile and safe environment for patients undergoing GI procedures.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies and GI care protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Active and unrestricted Illinois State RN License.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a patient care setting (gastroenterology or related field preferred).
  • Strong understanding of the gastrointestinal system, digestive processes, and common GI disorders (e.g., IBS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis).
  • BLS certification (Basic Life Support) is mandatory. ACLS certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) (a plus).
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach with a focus on patient education and empowerment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
