An entry-level, non-board certified genetic counselor position focuses on providing support and information about inherited conditions to individuals and families, often assisting with tasks like collecting family histories, interpreting test results, and educating patients about genetic risks. They work under the supervision of more experienced counselors or geneticists, and their responsibilities may include patient education, documentation, and participation in research or outreach activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Interaction: Meeting with patients and families to gather detailed medical and family histories, often involving interviews, discussions with physicians, and reviewing medical records.
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluating genetic information to identify individuals and families at risk for specific inherited disorders.
  • Education and Counseling: Explaining genetic risks, testing options, and the implications of genetic conditions to patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
  • Test Coordination: Helping patients navigate the process of genetic testing, including understanding the risks, benefits, and limitations of different tests.
  • Documentation: Preparing and maintaining accurate records of counseling sessions, test results, and other relevant information.
  • Support: Providing emotional and psychological support to individuals and families dealing with the impact of genetic conditions.
  • Collaboration: Working with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians and laboratory specialists, to coordinate patient care.
  • Research and Outreach: Participating in research projects, educational programs, and outreach activities related to genetics and genetic counseling.

Typical Tasks:

  • Reviewing patient referrals and prioritizing cases.
  • Developing and implementing counseling plans.
  • Obtaining informed consent for genetic testing.
  • Coordinating genetic testing and interpreting test results.
  • Communicating test results to patients and referring clinicians.
  • Making referrals to appropriate support services.
  • Participating in team meetings and case conferences.

Important Considerations:

  • Entry-level positions often require a master's degree in genetic counseling and may be a pathway to board certification.
  • While not board certified, entry-level counselors work under the supervision of experienced professionals and may have specific limitations on their scope of practice.
  • Experience in a clinical setting, such as a doctor's office, can be beneficial for entry-level positions.
