Overview
Responsible for dispensing/distribution, profiling and record keeping of medications. Disseminate drug information to other members of the health care team and to patients to insure optimum patient care, clinical monitoring of drug therapy, preparation extemporaneous compounds and participation in in-services, committees and research.
Responsibilities
- Apply policies and procedures for dispensing and administration of medications within the Medical Center. This includes prescription interpretation, calculations, and claims processing.
- Maintain proper record keeping for all dispensing activities using the electronic health record
- Perform physical inventory of Pharmaceuticals to ensure appropriate supply/inventory of medications are available. And also check dispensing areas for expired medications and remove for processing.
- Assist the Manager and Supervisor in the training pharmacy technicians & interns and students.
- Participate in inter and intra departmental committees when assigned.
- Document and communicate clinical interventions in the electronic health record with physicians, nurses and other health-care professionals.
- Prepare Compound drugs and dosage forms that are needed for patient care, following established protocols and drug information resources.
- Prepare Chemotherapy as needed
- Maintain work area in a clean, neat, orderly and safe manner. Assures that there are no safely hazards and that floors and aisles are clean and clear.
- Demonstrate clear understanding of pharmacy's goals, ethics, and core services
- Support the pharmacy administration in achieving new directives, and departmental goals
- Uphold the practice of pharmacy, and the image of the profession in society.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications
Education:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited college of pharmacy.
Experience:
- Prior Hospital or retail pharmacy experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Licenses, Certifications:
- Must be a current registered licensed pharmacist in the State of New York.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires long periods of standing and bending to unpack boxes containing medications.
- Ability to transport medication carts with force up to 25 pounds and lift and carry items up to 40 pounds.
