Overview

The Physician Assistant performs diagnostic and therapeutic tests and performs various medical services as directed by the physician in charge.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient’s medical history and performs initial or periodic physical examinations.
  • Order lab tests and routine and diagnostic procedures required for complete evaluation of patient’s condition.
  • Make an assessment of patient’s condition, or suggests a differential diagnosis, based on patient’s chart, results of tests, physical exam and other established medical policies and procedures. Suggest appropriate treatment of patient and assists in the management of the patient.
  • Prescribe mediation, order routine fluids, diets and similar patient care orders. (Orders must be countersigned by physician).
  • Keep required medical records by recording notes on tests, findings and treatment ordered in patient’s charts and evaluates patients charts (countersigned by physician).
  • Perform laboratory procedures or procedures to implement the diagnostic assessment and management plan including; drawing blood specimen for testing, blood counts, urinalysis, bacteriologic smears, stains and culture pulmonary function tests, catherizations, starting IV solutions and administering IN medications and other routine procedures for which he has received specific supervised training and evaluation.
  • Perform minor surgical procedures including routing suturing of lacerations, skin biopsies, incision and drainage of superficial abscess, removal of minor skin liaisons, applying and removing casts and traction apparatus.
  • Initiate consultations and monitors scheduling of patients for special tests.
  • Counsel patients and their families with reference to preventative care, medical problems and the use of prescribed treatment and drugs.
  • Assist in the management of medical and surgical emergencies; cardiopulmonary resuscitation, life threatening traumatic injuries, etc. (may start such management if physician is not available).
  • Make daily rounds to observe and record pertinent progress of patients updating and summarizing charts and notifying physician of changes in patient’s conditions.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

IF ASSIGNED TO SURGERY

  • Obtains admission histories and performs physical examinations.
  • Assists physician in the operating room during surgery. 
  • Assists in pre and post-operative care of patients, changing dressings, passing tubes and drawing blood.
  • Writes admission examination, discharge and operative summaries. (Countersigned by physician)
  • Performs other duties as requested.

IF ASSIGNED TO MMTP OR DDS

  • Performs initial and/or annual physical examinations.
  • Orders required lab tests, reviews results and present them to physician for determination on admitting the patient for follow-up.
  • Evaluates patients’ reactions to medications and refer findings to physician.
  • Evaluates patients’ appropriateness for continued treatment according to Federal Regulations (MMTP).
  • Evaluates patients’ need for dosage change and recommends to physician in charge.
  • Reviews toxicology-urinalysis results and reports findings to the physician.
  • Evaluated medical complaints and makes referral to Physician (DDS).
  • Performs other duties as requested.

IF ASSIGNED TO GASTROINTESTINAL CLINICAL LABORATORY IN MEDICINE

  • Performs or assists the physician in the performance of gastreon-enterological tests and procedures including esophageal testing, gastric analysis, duodenal drainage and small bowel biopsy.
  • Obtains medical history and performs physical examination relative to required G.I. test to ensure that the test in indicated and that there is no counter-indication.
  • Orders and administers appropriate pre-medication and necessary stimulators and inhibitors of secretion.
  • Inserts tubes into the patient.
  • Collects and analyzes specimen, making necessary calculations and interpretations to obtain results of tests performed.
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMC’s electronic record systems, equipment and other healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Education:

  • BS Degree in accredited Physician Assistant Program.

Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years experience for Senior Physician Assistant (not automatic upon hire or upon attainment of 3 years of service) 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must possess good written and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a Physician Assistant in New York State.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day. 
  • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
