Registered Professional Nurse – Mental Health / Substance Abuse

Position Summary
- Responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care in accordance with professional standards.
- Provides comprehensive mental health nursing care to acutely ill adult psychiatric and substance abuse patients (ages 16+).
- Delivers care using the nursing process in collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Addresses patient and family needs to help patients achieve optimal health and wellness.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Clinical Care
- Provide nursing care to psychiatric, substance abuse, and dual-diagnosis patients.
- Identify and manage:
- Withdrawal symptoms
- Agitated or emotionally disturbed patients
- Dependent and suicidal patients
- Administer medications safely and per physician orders.
- Respond to psychiatric emergencies using non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
- Maintain infection control and safety standards.
- Provide psychosocial support and patient education.
Assessment
- Perform comprehensive physical, psychological, and social assessments.
- Assess patients through observation, interviews, and review of medical records.
Document complete nursing assessments including:
- Fall risk
- Pain
- Suicide risk
- Nutrition
- Psychosocial and environmental factors
Education level and discharge planning needs
- Identify nursing problems related to mental illness, substance abuse, or prolonged neuroleptic use.
- Reassess patients continuously and communicate findings to the healthcare team.
- Nursing Diagnosis & Planning
- Formulate, prioritize, and document nursing diagnoses.
- Develop patient-centered, measurable goals and individualized care plans.
- Identify patient education needs and discharge planning requirements upon admission.
Implementation & Leadership
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to implement care plans.
- Provide individual and group health teaching and counseling sessions.
- Participate in treatment planning, medical rounds, and interdisciplinary rounds.
- Prioritize and manage assignments based on patient acuity, staffing, and resources.
- Delegate, guide, and support ancillary nursing staff.
- Ensure all procedures are performed within scope of practice and mental health nursing standards.
- Investigate, document, and communicate unusual occurrences.
- May have unsupervised patient contact while performing duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Evaluation
- Evaluate and document patient responses to nursing and medical interventions.
- Modify care plans based on patient outcomes in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Evaluate patient and family understanding of health education and discharge instructions.
Position Requirements
- Active New York State RN License
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
- BCLS certification required
- 1 year of medical-surgical nursing experience preferred
- Knowledge of PMCS preferred
