Under general supervision, but in accordance with established policies and procedures provides instruction/training to other department personnel regarding surgical instrumentation and case carts including identification, cleaning/handling, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and storage.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned . 

  • Assembles, decontaminates, sterilizes frays and single instruments, picks up and delivers clean and soiled equipment and supplies, dispenses medical supplies and equipment
  • Picks up and receives reusable soiled supplies/equipment, terminally cleans/disinfects reusable equipment for sterilization
  • Assembles and wraps reusable syringes/needles for sterilization. Assembles, folds and wraps for sterilization linen packs and linen articles
  • Fills staff requisitions for floor stock and patient care supplies and delivers them from storeroom/dispensing area
  • Delivers supplies to Nursing Units following delivery schedules with priority given to CCU, Surgery and ER
  • Dispenses items from carts, organizes and fills par level quotas in areas
  • Processes loads for sterilization. Maintains disaster carts, special procedure carts and supply carts
  • Checks shelves for outdated materials, either reprocessing or properly disposing of outdated Supplies/materials, checks packaging for compromised integrity and employs proper stock rotation
  • Observes established safety measures to minimize hazards
  • Manages own time in a productive and reliable manner completing work assignments on time.
  • Completes appropriate volume of work while maintaining quality standards
  • Organize work procedures to general acceptable levels of productivity
  • Completes own work as required and assists other as needed
  • Cooperates with co-workers and management to maintain a harmonious environment. Demonstrates core competency required for job performance
  • Adjusts work schedule to accommodate changing priorities Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner
  • Utilize proper body mechanics in all job functions
  • Follows established emergency, infection control and/or standard precaution procedures as required. Maintains work area and equipment according to standards and policies
  • Attends mandatory in-services related to safety and/or infection control
  • Supports and participates in department quality improvement activities
  • Provides quality improvements which enhance effectiveness and efficiency of department. Provides courteous service to internal/external customers in all activities
  • Communicates in a professional manner emphasizing objectivity and non-judgmental viewpoints. Assists in solving customer problems in a cooperative manner
  • Serves as on-call for emergency cases/supply/equipment 
  • Train and orient all new hire
  • Prepare and complete reporting requirements
  • Approve time, absence for team members
  • Compile, prepare and report for hospital reporting
  • Prepare and submit policies and procedure for review and approval
  • Responsible for ensuring department logs, documents and other pertinent information is updated and archived
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Current sterilization certificate
  • High School graduate, with effective communication skills 
  • At least six months of related experience
