Essential Responsibilities:
Depending on the type of precaution(s) that the patient is to be observed, the Observation Tech will follow the protocol described in the training: "Observation Training Types.'
When assigned to be an Constant Observer (sitter), the staff person will:
- Sit with the patient according to established guidelines for Observation and patient precautions.
- Complete precaution sheet according to policy every 15 minutes.
- Never leave the patient unattended.
- Secure relief for rest periods and meals.
- Give a detailed report to staff providing relief
- Provide necessary care as required for the patient that you are observing; feeding, bathing, toileting, etc.
- Remove excessive linens and towels from the patient room.
- Keep bedside table and room free from clutter. Only the observation record may be on the observer desk/chair area.
- There is to be no food, no personal items, and no reading material while working.
- Do constant contraband checks/
- Sit with the patient at meal times.
- Attend groups with the patient.
- Give status reports to RNs and oncoming Constant Observer.
- Report unusual behaviors to the RN immediately.
Skills and Abilities:
- Deal with the sick or handicapped of all ages.
- Understand and follow instructions exactly in caring for those who depend on you.
- Ability to communicate in a caring manner with people of all ages.
Required:
High School Graduate, completion of hospital orientation, training and competency relative to precautions, observation requirements and CPI.
Desired:
Completion of a minimum of one year's hospital or related health care experience.
