Essential Responsibilities:

Depending on the type of precaution(s) that the patient is to be observed, the Observation Tech will follow the protocol described in the training: "Observation Training Types.' 

When assigned to be an Constant Observer (sitter), the staff person will:

• Sit with the patient according to established guidelines for Observation and patient precautions. 
• Complete precaution sheet according to policy every 15 minutes. 
• Never leave the patient unattended. 
• Secure relief for rest periods and meals. 
• Give a detailed report to staff providing relief 
• Provide necessary care as required for the patient that you are observing; feeding, bathing, toileting, etc. 
• Remove excessive linens and towels from the patient room. 
• Keep bedside table and room free from clutter. Only the observation record may be on the observer desk/chair area. 
• There is to be no food, no personal items, and no reading material while working. 
• Do constant contraband checks/ 
• Sit with the patient at meal times. 
• Attend groups with the patient. 
• Give status reports to RNs and oncoming Constant Observer. 
• Report unusual behaviors to the RN immediately. 

Skills and Abilities:

• Deal with the sick or handicapped of all ages. 
• Understand and follow instructions exactly in caring for those who depend on you. 
• Ability to communicate in a caring manner with people of all ages. 

Required:

High School Graduate, completion of hospital orientation, training and competency relative to precautions, observation requirements and CPI. 

Desired:

Completion of a minimum of one year's hospital or related health care experience.
