Job Title: Nurse Manager – Inpatient Services
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Job Summary
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the daily operations, clinical oversight, and administrative management of the Nursing Department’s inpatient services. In collaboration with the Director, this role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care is delivered in alignment with regulatory standards, organizational policies, and evidence-based practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical and Operational Leadership
- Oversee the day-to-day clinical operations of the inpatient unit, ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate patient care.
- Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to nursing staff.
- Maintain 24-hour accountability for operational leadership and staff coordination.
- Ensure alignment with the Philosophy of Nursing, Scope of Service, and ethical standards.
- Regulatory and Quality Compliance
- Implement and enforce hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory codes.
- Monitor and facilitate compliance with standards from the NY State Office of Mental Health (OMH), NY Department of Health (DOH), NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), ACS, and Joint Commission (JCAHO).
- Gather and report data required for performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and internal audits.
Performance Improvement
- Lead and coordinate performance improvement initiatives with an interdisciplinary approach.
- Utilize continuous quality improvement (CQI) tools and benchmarks.
- Conduct Root Cause Analyses as needed and apply learnings to clinical practice.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Participate in budget preparation, resource planning, and inventory control.
- Oversee staffing, scheduling, and workload distribution to optimize patient care delivery.
- Provide administrative coverage for the Nursing Department as required.
Patient and Staff Relations
- Foster positive relationships with patients, families, staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Promote a professional, respectful, and supportive work environment.
- Address patient care concerns and staff issues proactively and constructively.
Professional Development
- Support and encourage staff education and development.
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities to stay current with clinical trends and leadership practices.
Additional Duties
- Support hospital initiatives to improve HCAHPS scores and patient satisfaction.
- Develop and execute communication plans across the team and with leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Sr. VP of Patient Care Services.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution required.
Licensure & Certifications
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience.
- At least two (2) years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated competency in clinical specialty area.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in electronic health records and healthcare IT systems.
- Working knowledge of CQI methodologies and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage high-stress situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) or Healthcare Administration.
- Additional certifications in nursing leadership or clinical specialties.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Physically demanding environment with prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, and lifting.
- Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds; assist with patient handling up to 100 pounds.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, hazardous materials, and other healthcare-related risks.
- Must have manual dexterity and correctable vision and hearing.
- Flexibility in work schedule and availability for on-call responsibilities.
