Responsibilities:

  • Review surgery schedule and establish list of therapy patients. Prepare patient instruction handouts. 
  • Introduce self to patient and caregiver(s) and explain therapy provider role in their post-operative care. 
  • Perform assessment of patient for readiness for x-rays if ordered and therapy session(s). 
  • Communicate with radiology technician regarding x-rays if ordered. 
  • Provide instruction to patient and caregiver(s) physician specific rehabilitation protocol for Hip Resurfacing, Total Hip Arthroplasty Direct Anterior, Total Hip Arthroplasty Posterior, Uni and Total Knee Arthroplasty and Sacroiliac Joint Fusion. 
  • Instruct use of hip kit as needed. 
  • Instruct and ensure proper fit of crutches and/or walker. 
  • Instruct and ensure proper and safe use of assistive device(s) for transfers and ambulation with proper weight bearing status on level surface and up and down steps to simulate patient’s home environment. 
  • Use gait belt for safety when ambulating patients. 
  • Issue DME (durable medical equipment) as needed. Complete DME paperwork. 
  • Answer patient and caregiver(s) questions regarding post-operative rehabilitation. 
  • Complete therapy documentation. 
  • Demonstrate proper Infection Control practices. 
  • Provide emergency care according to physician and administrative policy as needed. 
  • Communicate relevant patient information to PACU nurse, radiology technician, surgeon, or other medical staff as needed. 
  • Provide for patient safety by assuring a safe environment and compliance with the Life Safety Code. 

Employment Variables:

  • Coordinate work schedule with lead physical therapist. 
  • Work schedule subject to change according to administrative decision to accommodate patient surgery schedule. 
  • Staff is expected to leave when work is completed. 

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program. 
  • At least 5 years of clinical experience required including at least two years of acute care hospital-based treatment of total joint patients.  
  • Current South Carolina State Licensure to practice.   
  • Current BLS certification.
